Sandra Cooper-RyderNicole Seymour
Young Woman of Excellence

“Nicole feels passionate about bettering the lives of others and has actively pursued activities that challenge her. There is little doubt that she will continue to contribute to her community in the future.”

Nicole was in her first year at UWO when she responded to a YMCA posting for students interested in offering a science program for children in the Y’s community school programs. With another volunteer, she created and presented two science lessons. In her second year, she coordinated the design of a six-week outline of hands-on science activities and in her third year, expanded it and named it Super Science. The program quickly became popular with nearly 100 children and 45-65 volunteers each term. Nicole has coordinated volunteer training sessions and information presentations for UWO students and helped raise funds to continue support for the website. Now that she is graduating Nicole has arranged for others to carry on her legacy.

Also during her time at Western, Nicole was co-president of the UWO Table Tennis Club and a dedicated research assistant for Dr. John Trevithick. Last summer while employed as a research assistant by Dr. Amit Garg, Nicole co-authored an academic paper about kidney transplantation that is pending publication in a major medical journal.

Among other recognition, Nicole has been on the Dean’s List for the past three years and received a Millennium Excellence Scholarship in 2007.

Nicole’s infectious enthusiasm for science has enriched the lives of children and volunteers alike.
